Richard Charles Victorian Rosewood Dining Chairs. Set 4 rosewood dining chairs, circa 1865, The cartouche shaped backs with foliate carving and a floral splat, the serpentine fronted stuffed seats covered in nailed velvet, the moulded seat rail with a central carved medallion, on hipped cabriole legs with tapering carved beads.
These chairs are very distinctive with their carved details. They are designed, and also probably made, by Manchester based Richard Charles (1823-1893). Some of his work is associated with the Aesthetic Movement, but not all, and these chairs are more traditionally based. The design can be seen in the Antique Collectors Club book, first published 1977, Pictorial Dictionary of British 19th Century Furniture Design, page 225.
