Pair of Large Painted Canvas Panels After Jean-Antoine Watteau LEnjoleur / The Coaxer.A striking pair of large hand painted decorative canvas panels after Jean-Antoine Watteaus LEnjoleur, a title variously translated as The Coaxer or The Charmer. Each tall composition centres on a courting couple set within an elaborate arabesque framework of scrolling foliage, urns, architectural motifs and stylised ornament, closely reflecting the decorative language associated with Watteaus early 18th century interior schemes and the later engravings made after his designs. Painted in a warm palette of ochre, rust, blue and green, the panels have a wonderfully theatrical quality, with their nearly two-metre height giving them real presence. The surfaces have softened and mellowed with age, which suits the subject beautifully and gives the pair the look of old decorative room panels rather than conventional framed paintings. Particularly effective hung together as a pair, they would also work individually as large-scale statement pieces in a hallway, bedroom, sitting room or more maximalist interior.
Dimensions: 80cm x 199cm high
Condition:Decorative antique/vintage condition with age-related wear throughout. The painted surfaces show rubbing, scuffs, small losses, craquelure and areas of rippling and puckering to the paint. One canvas has a small stretched/distorted area, and there are further marks and localised surface damage visible across both panels. The condition is consistent with their decorative use and scale and forms part of the character of the pair. Please refer closely to the photographs for condition.
