Framed 18th Century Armorial Bookplate of John Peachey Esq 1782. An original 18th century engraved armorial bookplate made for John Peachey Esq. and dated 1782. The small engraving is beautifully detailed, with the Peachey coat of arms set within an elaborate scrolling Chippendale-style cartouche surrounded by flowers and foliage, with a crest above, motto ribbon and the engraved inscription John Peachey Esq. 1782 below. John Peachey (17491816) later became the 2nd Baron Selsey and was associated with West Dean in Sussex, where the Peachey family maintained an important library. Examples of this particular bookplate are recorded in institutional and specialist bookplate collections. Now mounted within a simple black frame, its diminutive scale and intricate engraving make it an appealing piece of 18th century graphic and heraldic design.
Dimensions: Overall 15cm x 17.5cm x 1.5cm // 5.5cm x 7cm
Condition:Antique condition with age-related toning, foxing, staining and discolouration to the paper, particularly around the outer edges of the engraving. There is further light age-related marking to the surrounding mount. The black frame is later and has minor marks and wear from use. Please refer closely to the photographs for the overall condition.
