Dowlatabad Red Afghan Rug, North West Afghanistan / Turkmenistan Border Region, Wool on Wool Foundation. Early 20th Century rug, The red field with two columns of six square reserves each enclosing sets of four radiating lozenge stylised flower head medallions within a red border enclosing complementary continuous red square reserves each enclosing a radiating lozenge stylised flower head medallion
Rugs made in this Border Region are made in town and village workshops and by nomadic tribal groups. Designs are based on or influenced by traditional styles of designs and pattern details as seen in Turkoman tribal rugs from Turkmenistan. Pattern details and motifs display stylised flora and fauna forms drawn geometrically often totemic in style. The colours are traditional to the region with shades of red invariably seen as the background colour.
Dimensions: 227cm x 109cm.
Condition: Some fraying at the ends, minor losses to the pile.

Delivery
Free delivery is available on small items and selected smaller pieces of furniture. This covers UK mainland addresses only and excludes the Highlands and Islands.
