Korashan Rug. Circa 1970s Birjand Rug, Khorassan District, North East Persia, Wool on Cotton Foundation, with a Ghashghai tribal inspired deign, the tangerine field with a pale blue octagonal medallion enclosing an ivory stylised flower head centre piece, supported by mirrored angular vines issuing flower heads supported by scattered florets, pale blue spandrels enclosing ivory stylised flower heads, within an ivory border enclosing continuous flower head roundels linked by vines issuing chevron tendrils ending in florets
Birjand is a significant centre for the production of decorative formal design rugs. Birjand rugs often display styles of design based on other regions traditional patterns. The design as seen here is based on a design style as seen in tribal Ghashghai rugs from the Shiraz area of South West Persia. The pattern is defined by geometric drawing displaying stylised flora and sometimes fauna forms with motifs often totemic in appearance, as is the case here. The colours are from a traditional Birjand palette, the tones of which suggest that this rug was probably made around the date as indicated in the Era line.
