Antique Wool Erivan Rug, Armenia, South Caucasus, Wool on Cotton Foundation.Retailed by Harvey Nichols, label to the rear.
The pale caramel field with a central pale blue stepped and serrated edged cartouche medallion enclosing an hexagonal stylised flower head issuing mirrored plants and hooked vines, between two similar cream medallions supported by flower heads and serrated leaves within a blue continuous flower head and hooked vine border.
The reverse knotting detail confirms this to be of the origin as stated. Erivan and surrounding town and village workshops make rugs displaying a variety of designs based on rug designs originating from the traditional centres and districts throughout the region defined as the ‘Caucasus’. The design as seen here shows characteristic stylised motifs drawn in totemic form, originating from the Kuba district of the North East Caucasus. The colours are typical to an Erivan palette as seen in their rugs from around the date as indicated. These more muted tones of colour may have been created by a chemical washing process which is known to have been used in this area to soften the appearance of the original colours. This was frequently done between around 1910 and 1920 when it was thought that more muted tones suited western markets better.
