Antique Mahogany Writing Table with Two Drawers.A simple and nicely proportioned antique mahogany writing table, raised on four straight square legs with a pair of small drawers positioned at either side of the kneehole. The front has an unusual arrangement, with a central brass escutcheon set into the frieze despite there being no corresponding long drawer behind it. Whether this was conceived as a decorative feature or relates to an old alteration is difficult to establish, but it gives the table a slightly quirky character. The drawers retain brass swan neck handles and the mahogany has developed a warm, gently worn surface across the top and frame. Its relatively shallow depth and clean lines make it useful as a writing desk, console or occasional table where a larger desk would feel too heavy.

Condition:Good antique condition with general wear, knocks, scratches, marks and variation to the finish consistent with age and use. The top has numerous old surface marks and scratches together with areas of fading and uneven colour. There is further rubbing and wear to the edges, legs and drawer fronts. The brass fittings show age and tarnishing. The central escutcheon does not correspond with a functioning drawer and may relate to an historic alteration or simply be decorative.
