Antique Luri Rug. Shiraz Area, South West Persia, Wool on Wool Foundation. Circa 1910. Blue field with two columns of conjoined hexagonal medallions enclosing hooked palmettes and birds supported by birds around a similar column of hexagonal medallions, within an aubergine continuous stylised plant and serrated leaf border.
The Luri tribal group made rugs whilst on seasonal migration from North West Persia to South West Persia. They are one of a number of tribal groups following this route and making rugs of similar character. In true tribal style based on a tradition dating back centuries, designs display stylised motifs of flora and fauna forms drawn geometrically to create totemic images. Luri rugs tend to be coarse and loosely woven. Colours are varied, and the tones of these colours show aniline dye stuffs and suggest a date of making as indicated. Their rugs are marketed from Shiraz in South West Persia, and often they are simply called Shiraz rugs.
