17th Century Carved & Initialled Oak Coffer.A decorative 17th century joined oak coffer with a richly carved three panel front and a deep, dark surface developed through centuries of use. The facade is centred by three recessed panels, each carved with a geometric lozenge motif, beneath a frieze of repeating interlaced decoration and further incised detail to the rails and uprights. The hinged lid has been later embellished with three finely carved oak panels of scrolling foliage and flowerheads; the two outer panels incorporate the initials HWF and RAF, while the centre is worked with a floral motif. Although not original to the coffer, these later panels give the top considerable decorative interest and form part of the piece's long history of alteration and reuse. The oak has an almost blackened surface in places, with warmer tones showing through across the raised carving and areas of wear. The lid opens to a generous storage interior with a later internal compartment at one end.

Condition:Antique condition with considerable wear, alterations and repairs accumulated over its long life. The three carved panels inset into the lid are later additions and are not original to the 17th century coffer. There are marks, knocks, scratches, old splits, losses, areas of historic woodworm and general surface wear throughout. The internal candle box has been repaired and incorporates reused timber with old printed lettering.
