Afghan Ensi Rug, Nangahar, East Afghanistan, Wool on Wool Foundation. 20th Century, The red quartered field with columns of lattice based candelabra divided by a vertical column enclosing stylised flora, a central horizontal band enclosing rows of hooked medallions, an ivory inner border enclosing continuous serrated leaves linked by angular vines, a red main border enclosing continuous stars, a charcoal horizontal end band with continuous hooked arches with stylised plants.
Rugs of this type are made in town and village workshops in the Nangahar province and in neighbouring areas of Pakistan. They are made on a large commercial scale for decorative furnishing purposes to global markets. The design of this rug is known as the 'Ensi', defined by the quartered field arrangement and presence of the candelabra motif. The design originates from Turkestan bordering north west Afghanistan and made by Turkoman tribal weavers. This traditional pattern is often reproduced reproduced in the region as specified.
