Vintage Abadeh Rug

 Abadeh Rug, South West Persia, Wool on Cotton Foundation. Late 20th Century, The tangerine field with a blue octagonal medallion enclosing an ivory flower head formed by pairs of 'boteh' supported by mirrored trees issuing palmettes and flower heads, scattered flower heads, florets, birds and animals, within blue stepped spandrels enclosing ivory flower heads, scattered flower heads, plants, birds and rats, an ivory border enclosing continuous polychrome palmettes linked by angular vines issuing flower heads and leaves.

Abadeh is a well known centre for the production of decorative furnishing rugs with designs often based on traditional regional tribal patterns. This pattern is based on a style as seen in traditional Ghashghai nomadic rugs. Motifs are drawn geometrically displaying stylised flora and fauna forms, with motifs often totemic in appearance, this based on a tribal tradition dating back many centuries. A variety of birds and animals are often scattered amongst the flora elements. Much of the fauna is commonly seen, however there are instances where less common animals and birds are seen. The presence of a rat as seen in the spandrels is unusual and rare, but they do appear from time to time. Other unusual fauna that do appear are snails, tortoises, worms, centipedes. There is no specific meaning to such an addition, but is simply meaningful to the weaver who may have included it as having encountered one, and choosing to throw into the composition. Tribal rugs are superbly individual and a part of their charm is when such additions are included. The colours are from a traditional Abadeh palette, with tangerine, blue, pale blue and ivory predominantly used.
