Esfahan is an historically important centre for the production of decorative formal design rugs displaying floral patterns drawn in a curvilinear style based on a Persian city workshop tradition dating back to the early 17th Century. Esfahan is particularly well know for the production of technically finely knotted rugs. The pattern elements are highly detailed and invariably the vinery is drawn in an intense curvilinear style as is seen here. The colours are from a traditional Esfahan palette. The tones of which suggest that this rug was probably made between 1930 and 1960.
