The sofa has been a key piece of furniture in homes dating back to 2000 BC where the ‘suffah’, as it was called in Arabic, was a bench to rest on. They were exclusively for the use of the rich, an image that continued into Roman times when a version more akin to the chaise longue was used for eating while reclining. The sofa then disappears for centuries before re-emerging in Europe in the late 16th century. In England, Thomas Chippendale helped popularise the use of the sofa  as a practical and comfortable item affordable to the many.
