During the 18th Century, one of the most recognised furniture makers was Edwards and Roberts. The company was founded in 1845 and they were trading as 'Edwards & Roberts, 21 Wardour Street, Antique and Modern Cabinet Makers and Importers of Ancient Furniture' by 1854.
Their attention to detail produced superb quality English furniture and using some of the finest quality timbers, they became one of the leading cabinet makers during the Victorian period. As well as making and selling their own furniture, they also retailed, restored and adapted antique furniture, mainly English and Continental furniture - they were skilled at adapting antique furniture to suit modern needs and specialised in marquetry, inlay and ormolu. You can find many examples of earlier furniture that bears the stamp 'Edwards & Roberts', although it was made in an earlier period, and be assured that they only stamped furniture that was worthy of their great name.
By 1892, they had expanded into around a dozen buildings in Wardour Street, which made Wardour Street an furniture retail are in the latter part of the 19th Century. The company ceased trading in 1899.
